Course Description: Introduction to Weibull Engineering (WE). WE is a major tool for continuous improvement. The Weibull model, developed originally by Waloddi Weibull starting about 1950, is the most widely used probability model for how failure mechanisms affect product lifetime, key for problem analysis, reliability monitoring, forecasting, and corrective action. Although Dr. Weibull is no longer with us, his methods and insights carry on in countless new applications today. WE extends Weibull methods to real life applications throughout all product phases (development, production, operation) plus there are many other uses such as for processes and for metrology. SuperSMITH® software is demonstrated although other commercial software for Weibull analysis is available in the marketplace.
This overview is designed to bring the novice up to a thorough understanding of WE capability. Topics include type of input data to acquire, how to make a Weibull plot, alternate fitting methods, alternate models, better solution for small data sets, failure analysis, failure forecasting, optimal preemptive parts replacement for parts that wear out, cost analysis, confidence, test planning, accelerated testing, and the importance of a Weibull database especially for Weibull slope values. Relevant questions at any time are welcome during the session.
This 3-hr WE DEMO session features overview of topics in The New Weibull Handbook(c) authored by Dr. Bob Abernethy, the #1 world expert in Weibull for over 35 years. Each participant can install the associated free DEMO software for Microsoft Windows(R) platforms or Windows simulators. Download the latest version of this DEMO at https://FultonFindings.com or https://bathtubsoftware.com on the internet. Also, a free PlayTIME(TM) tutorial booklet in “.PDF” format is available at the same internet address. The tutorial booklet has over 50 case-study examples with step-by-step instructions for solution and covers every type of problem and every related software option. Each session attendee is encouraged prior to the session to follow the tutorial steps on their own computer using the free DEMO software.
NOTE: The DEMO software performs actual solution for previously saved data sets and allows exercise of all options in the software. All other input data, not previously saved from this software, is randomly altered before analysis (results not useful). This arrangement allows for free distribution of the DEMO software. The FULL version of the software does not alter input data and produces useful results.
Who should attend: Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s), Suppliers, Source Control Document (SCD) Writers, Design Professionals, Reliability Professionals, Quality Professionals, Manufacturing Professionals, Test Planners, Test Technicians, and Equipment End-Users (EU’s).
About the instructors (one or both may present):
Wes Fulton is the founder and CEO of Fulton Findings LLC, and author of the first widely used Weibull plotting software in 1987. Wes has degrees in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech and from California State University at Long Beach. He has 16 years of experience in aerospace manufacturing with Garrett, Allied Signal, and Moog. The updated software, SuperSMITH®, is fully compatible with the global Weibull specification IEC-61649 and with the world standard handbook by Dr. Robert B. Abernethy (Dr. Bob). Most material for this Weibull plotting class was originally developed by Dr. Bob, who was the head of supportability with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines for decades. Dr. Bob’s Weibull handbook is the reference for this session.
Carl Tarum is President of Bathtub Software LLC and the Director of Software Research for Fulton Findings. He enhanced the SuperSMITH software HELP module and added several advanced software features such as mixture analysis, missing data solution, logbook and “Weibull Library” functions, and he improved goodness-of-fit metrics in the software. Carl has an engineering degree from Montana State University and an MBA from the University of Michigan at Flint. He has 34 years of manufacturing experience with Nexteer Automotive. Prior roles included Design for Six Sigma Master Black Belt where he taught and coached problem solving. He has five patents related to steering systems, two in production.
