Course Description:
Monte Carlo simulation is a valuable engineering tool often underutilized by quality and reliability professionals.  It can provide the user with a comprehensive analysis by delivering quantitative results with probabilities of occurrence and confidence intervals.

This tutorial will cover the use of Monte Carlo simulation in various engineering applications including quality, reliability, risk analysis, tolerance stack-up, design and process variation. It will explain the basics of Monte Carlo simulation focusing on design and process variation as frequent causes of quality and reliability problems.  It will demonstrate how to use an Excel spreadsheet to run a Monte Carlo simulation and analyze the results.  It will also show how to use RAND() function to sample virtually any statistical distribution.

The attendees will gain the basic knowledge of Monte Carlo simulation, understand the capabilities and relative simplicity of this method and thus expand their arsenal of reliability and quality engineering tools.

Outline:

  1. Numerous applications of Monte Carlo methods
  2. Basics of Monte Carlo simulation
  3. Process flow and the steps to conduct a simulation
  4. Statistical distributions most commonly used in Quality and Reliability: Weibull, Normal, Lognormal, Exponential, PERT, Uniform and Triangular and how to sample them using Excel spreadsheet
  5. How to run Monte Carlo simulation with Excel spreadsheet and how to analyze and interpret the obtained results
  6. Reliability case studies using Excel to illustrate the methods and techniques and their application to problems.
  7. Sensitivity analysis, correlated inputs and other enhancements of Monte Carlo simulation
  8. Conclusions

About your instructor:  Andre Kleyner has over 30 years of engineering, research, consulting, and managerial experience specializing in reliability of electronic and mechanical systems designed to operate in severe environments.  He received the doctorate in Mechanical/Reliability Engineering from University of Maryland, and Master of Business Administration from Ball State University.  Dr. Kleyner was Global Reliability Engineering Leader with a major Tier 1 automotive supplier and now is a private consultant.  He is an ASQ Fellow, a certified reliability and quality engineer (CRE, CQE) and a Six Sigma Black Belt.  For many years Dr. Kleyner was a part time lecturer at Purdue University teaching systems engineering.  He holds several US and foreign patents and authored over 50 professional publications including three books on the topics of reliability, statistics and warranty management.  Andre Kleyner also is the editor of the Wiley Series in Quality and Reliability Engineering, technical book series published by John Wiley & Sons.
